Signal Conversion: ONUs change electric signals used by devices on the customer’s side to optical ones suitable for transmission over a Passive Optical Network (PON).

Traffic Management: One of the main functions of ONUs is traffic management which involves managing different types or classes of data packets according to their priority levels so that they can be transmitted efficiently through an optical network.

Security Features: ONUs may have security measures like encryption/decryption algorithms built inside them along with other authentication protocols designed to ensure safekeeping against unauthorized access while maintaining integrity throughout communication channels within PONs.

Service Differentiation: Service providers configure various service tiers at their discretion where each tier corresponds with certain ONUs capabilities regarding supporting specific types of services like internet access, voice over IP (VoIP), and IPTV among others as needed by different categories of customers.
